"No one can find a safe way out for himself if society is sweeping towards destruction.
Therefore everyone, in his own interests, must thrust himself vigorously into the intellectual battle. None can stand aside with unconcern; the interests of everyone hang on the result."
Ludwig von Mises (Austrian economist, 1881-1973)
Fear favors false safety over freedom
By David Morgan
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -- In the current crisis our fearful and poorly educated public will demand a "stronger" government, which means less individual freedom. They will favor more regulation, more "protection" against competition not only in financial markets but in the marketplace of ideas.
They've been taught by parents, teachers, churches and government that they cannot possibly understand how our world works - that logic, physics, economics, politics, etc are too complicated for the average individual to comprehend, and that history and philosophy are not really necessary, and that they must trust their "leadership" to do the right thing on their behalf.
Americans, not so long ago, were thought by most of the world to be the most educated and innovative people on Earth. But somewhere after WWII we abandoned the thought that a "liberal" education, in its original meaning, was important. Our leadership placed more emphasis on specialized education and trained millions of competent mechanics and technicians and other workers, and hired millions of government workers who, for a time, were called "public servants".
And they all believed that their futures were assured - in spite of their very limited educations.
Now the angry and insecure public, unable to trust their own thinking and understandably unwilling to trust their current leaders, is about to plunge headlong into the destruction of the most important experiment in democracy and human rights in the history of the world. They will allow even fewer persons to coerce the population, rather than persuade them, into compliance with "national objectives".
Watch for the signs - further monitoring of the communications of citizens, monitoring and restrictions on travel inside the U.S., currency exchange restrictions, more voting irregularities, harsher and unconstitutional punishments of minorities and dissenters.
The once great American media won't provide us much warning. The U.S. press was compromised/neutralized long ago. The government didn't have to shut them down, they just bought them off.
------
Hitler was popular and elected and convinced the public and the congressional leadership to suspend the German constitution:
Hitler requested the Reichstag to temporarily delegate its powers to him so that he could adequately deal with the crisis. Denouncing opponents to his request, Hitler shouted, "Germany will be free, but not through you!" When the vote was taken, the result was 441 for and 84 against, giving Hitler the two-thirds majority he needed to suspend the German constitution. On March 23, 1933, what has gone down in German history as the "Enabling Act" made Hitler dictator of Germany, freed of all legislative and constitutional constraints. http://www.fff.org/freedom/fd0403a.asp
